Sureswar Dutta Law College (SDLC) was established in 2014 in Howrah, West Bengal, as the first Law College in the district. The institution was founded to honor the legacy of Late Sureswar Dutta, an eminent philanthropist, educationist, and social activist, whose life was dedicated to uplift the society.
This College is committed to foster academic and professional excellence, thereby striving to be recognized as a premier institution for legal education. Sureswar Dutta Law College also places a strong emphasis on nurturing ethical, knowledgeable, and socially responsible legal professionals equipped to face the challenges of the modern world.
Recognized by the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, the College is affiliated with the University of Calcutta and approved by the Bar Council of India to offer a comprehensive Five-Year B.A. LL.B. program.

In the year 2024, the College had received approval for an additional intake capacity of 60 students in its B.A. LL.B. program. Infrastructure
The College has a sprawling Eco-Conscious campus consisting of a ground, a pond and a lawn levitating domestic animal life as well as catering modern day amenities to the Law Aspirants which includes Modernised Library, Moot Court Room, Legal Aid Clinic, Separate Common Room for Girls’and Boys’, Indoor and Outdoor Game facilities, Seminar Hall, Auditorium, Cafeteria, Wi-Fi Zone, Computer Laboratory, Model Class Room, Medical Room.
ADMISSION PROCEDURE FOR B.A. LL.B. (5-YEAR) COURSE:
The admission process for the B.A. LL.B. (5-Year) Course at Sureswar Dutta Law College is conducted under the supervision of the University of Calcutta. Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set by the University and secure admission through merit ranking in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET). Based on this merit ranking candidates are allotted seats through a counseling process conducted by the University of Calcutta.
- Eligibility Criteria –
Candidates must have successfully completed the 10+2 level (or equivalent) from a board recognized by the University of Calcutta. The minimum qualifying marks are as follows:
- General Category: A minimum of 45% in the best four subjects (excluding Environmental Studies of WBCHSE).
- SC/ ST/ Persons with Disability (40% or more disability): A minimum of 40% in the best four subjects (excluding Environmental Studies of WBCHSE).
- Additional Requirements for Candidates from Other Boards: Candidates who have completed 10+2 from boards other than WBCHSE, ISC, CBSE, Rabindra Mukto Vidyalaya, and NIOS must obtain an “Equivalence Certificate” from the Registrar’s Office (Equivalence Section) of the University of Calcutta at: University of Calcutta 87/1, College Street, Kolkata – 700073
To obtain the Equivalence Certificate, candidates must submit a written application on plain paper along with a photocopy of their 10+2 mark sheet. This certificate is mandatory at the time of admission, and it is advisable to obtain it before submitting the online application.
